Nursing Assistant-Unit Clerk
Position Summary: The Nursing Assistant provides nursing care to patients, assists in maintenance of a safe and clean environment, and performs a variety of general and specialized clerical support tasks related to departmental functions under the direction and supervision of the Licensed Nursing Staff.
Due to changing organizational needs, work hours may vary.
CLINICAL JUDGMENT/CARE DELIVERY
• Effectively communicates patient, family or staff concerns
• Adhere to the policies and procedures of the hospital
• Completes required documentation
• Gathers and maintains supplies ready for use in patient care
• Demonstrates professional conduct with accountability for actions
• Greets customers and answers telephone in a professional manner
• Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
CARING PRACTICES/TEAMWORK
• Notifies RN/LPN in a timely manner with any significant changes in patient’s condition
• Utilizes Functional Pain Scale for ongoing assessment of pain
• Assists co-workers in total patient care
• Maintains proficiency in equipment operation
• Contributes to a team-oriented environment
• Participates in shift briefs, and huddles
• Seeks opportunities for exceeding expectations
• Demonstrates problem solving techniques and conflict resolution
• Resolves issues to improve patient satisfaction using service recovery
• Offers suggestions and actively participates in identifying department needs
ENVIRONMENT OF CARE
• Is responsible for maintaining patient safety at all times
• Completes course and competencies to be an effective patient safety companion
• Meets care needs of patients and families of BBGH
• Answers patient call lights promptly
• Completes occurrence reports when necessary and notifies Charge Nurse
• Follows BBGH Infection Control policies and procedures
• Performs hand hygiene before and after any patient interaction
• Maintains Standard Precautions and additional precautions as indicated
• Holds all health care workers accountable to reduce potential falls, hospital-acquired wounds, infections, and follows BBGH protocols/policies
ADVOCACY
• Employs a professional approach in all encounters
• Preserve patient confidentiality, autonomy, dignity, and rights
• Raises ethical questions and concerns with clinical team
• Advocates and speaks up for patients or co-workers
• Makes suggestions and actively participates in performance improvement initiatives

• Shares knowledge with colleagues

• Completes assigned education, mandatory training, and competencies in a timely manner

• Charges for patient care supplies appropriately

Measurement: 0-2 verbal counseling sessions during the evaluation period meets standard.
EDUCATION
Required: High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Participates in care to patients throughout the lifespan.
EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS
License/Certifications:
Required: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate for healthcare workers.
Maintains appropriate certifications
